Program Length: 45-60 minute

No one plans to be a drug addict or an alcoholic. Keith began abusing alcohol at the age of 13 and his reliance on alcohol to mask his pain continued until he faced and admitted it at the age of 35. Keith understands substance abuse and is a recovering alcoholic who recognizes that his strength and recovery is a process he chooses daily. After years of self-destruction, hurting others, and numerous run-ins with the law, Keith has been able to apply each of the 12 steps of recovery into his daily life and has developed a C.O.D.E. by which to live his life. He draws on personal experience to express his understanding of some of the hardest emotions that keep us trapped-guilt and shame.

By the end of the presentation, audiences will be able to:

  • Evaluate stories of the pain caused by substance abuse and how it can hurt others around you.

  • Identify ways to face guilt and shame associated with substance abuse when things don't go your way.

  • Summarize how to get substance abuse help for yourself or others in your organization when you see the problem.

  • List steps on how you can create a culture of safety and caring for others while recovering from substance abuse.
